We were forced to leave Ecuador and make our long trip back home to the snowy cold weather. We were up at 7 eating breakfast, then were on our way to our first of three flights back home. We group-hugged Diego and his wife goodbye before walking through customs. I still can’t believe I was able to experience a trip such as this. Not only was it informative but it was also relevant to my major and downright amazing. AMA LA VIDA – Laurel Klein

Day 15:
Pacari had claimed that their company worked so good with their farmers that the Fair Trade organization was minimalistic compared to the level they worked on. Due to this, they joined SPP instead. However, Fair Trade is a much more efficient organization than SPP. The other claim of the US certified organic is also not as realistic as the certification is easily bought than earned. Just because a product is organic does not mean it is sustainable. One beneficial claim that Pacari has done well was to increase the education and technology use of their farmers and children. But that too goes back to support and preserve Pacari’s profits as the farmers are more inclined to listen to the corporation.
A bus system is an efficient way to traverse around cities as they cut out almost ¾ of travel time in cities such as Curitiba in Brazil. However, the busses are so frequently used that it is almost impossible to get on one in the morning. This becomes costly to Quito workers as they get an hour of work deducted from their paycheck if they are more than 7 ½ minutes late to work. Ecuador has strict driving restrictions that punish drivers with jail time for common misdemeanors such as speeding. Cabs in the area are owned by politicians so cops ignore their misdemeanors. To restrict the amount of assaults and burglary’s, cities are now supporting a pink bus system strictly for women.
